Handmade typography
Led by a healthy dose of professional curiosity and a need to up the ante when it comes to logo design, I’ve been delving deeper and deeper into the world of bespoke and handmade letterforms.
Because my work revolves around logo design, bespoke typography is one of the skills that will help me take my service to the next level. Perhaps it's the thrill of creative exploration without the boundaries of a brief, or maybe it's the pleasure of creating forms with intent—whatever it is, it’s a pure joy to work on. It’s challenging and, at times, reduces me to an absolute novice—a welcome breath of fresh air after almost two decades in the industry.
This long-standing side project of mine has managed to accomplish one more crucial thing—namely, keeping professional burnout at bay. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a side project that allows for unadulterated creativity—one that permits mistakes without judgment, hours of sketches, and the organic evolution of a concept not bound by budget.
Let's start this little collection with slab serif forms that are just perfect for posters, headlines and hero banners. I wanted to work on something that would allow for a more ornamental approach.
For inspiration, I went to the old poster letterforms.
There is no better opportunity to work on blackletter-styled typography than Halloween.
The occasion also calls for some seasonal colour schemes and bespoke pumpkin illustrations.
This is my entry for the 36 Days of Type 2023. In the previous year, I made an ambitious commitment to craft a different letter each day, which, I must confess, proved to be quite overwhelming. So, for this edition, the objective was to focus on a single style, crafting elegant and timeless typography.
Bonfire night turns out to be another perfect pretext to work on some letterforms. Here I was looking for a classic serif form that will be easy to adapt for logotypes.
This letterform exploration had its start with one letter in 2022 as the first entry to 36 days of type. Since then I have managed to create a few words in the style.
